New Guitar

A guitar I ordered from CB Perkins in California finally arrived yesterday. It's a Godin 5th Avenue with a floating Ken Armstrong mini-humbucker mounted to the pickguard. The first thing I noticed was the finish: it's not a glassy, glossy finish, it's a kind of rough, thin finish that feels and looks amazing. You can see the ridges of the grain and feel it through the finish--very vintage-like. On playing it, I noticed the frets are tiny (another vintage touch), and the fretboard radius is pretty flat. It's set up with .13s but thanks to the shorter 24.75" scale, it's not any harder to play than my PRS Hollowbody with .12s. The action is good, the nut is well-cut, the acoustic tone is loud and bright. It's a bit boxy when you strum hard with a pick, but with fingers or less aggressive picking it's super warm and sweet. Plugged in, the tone is basically perfect. The mid-range emphasis common with archtops all but disappears and I'm left with just a really articulate, 3-d sound.

Although the original reason for buying this guitar was for lessons which never materalized, I have recently been recruited by a teacher at Eton House for a cover band. Wuxi has many bars and few bands, so we might be able to carve out a niche here and get some steady work. I think this guitar would be perfect for the kind of sets we're planning.

My New Blog

Welcome to I Write It Down So I Don't Forget. Here I will post things that I write down so I don't forget them. These things will probably relate to music, teaching and living in China.

This blog is taking over for my Livejournal because the jackass leaders of China blocked it. Are they afraid of emos or something? I suppose I can't blame them.
